There is now more of the face below the eyes, but the lower jaw is not yet fully developed.

Week 10

Mum

If you’re still not excited at this point, don’t worry, it’s normal. Even if the pregnancy is planned, you may find it difficult to relate to the 3cm-long abstract person who allegedly lives in your abdomen.

Many women find themselves on an emotional roller-coaster around this time of the pregnancy. You may cry for no reason, daydream a lot, or even experience a few vacant moments when you think absolutely nothing (remember when you asked your man what he was thinking about and he replied “nothing” – now you see how it’s possible).

Dad

Do you ever reckon you may be getting a little sidelined in this whole pregnancy gig? The mother-to-be is the one on whom all the attention is focused, and she’s the one growing your baby. We all know she deserves it, and we all know there’s only so much a man can do during pregnancy. But here’s a fun fact for you: When the baby arrives, the baby will be in the limelight, so use these nine months wisely to practise playing second fiddle. Joking aside though, if feeling left out has been on your mind lately, make sure you share these thoughts with your partner and let her know you’d like to be more involved. Getting involved early and at every level is the ticket, at least according to the experts.

Baby

You are now the size of a big strawberry and have graduated from an embryo to the status of a foetus. Your kidneys, gut, brain, and liver are growing strong this week. Bones and cartilage are forming, and while your pearly whites won’t appear until you’re about 6 months old, little buds are developing under your gums. Your fingers and toes are developed and you may even be growing miniature fingernails and toenails.

Things to keep in mind

  • Is that first trimester fatigue hitting you yet? Your sleep is probably being disturbed by having to pee multiple times during the night, general discomfort, and possibly some very strange vivid dreams
  • Inform your doctor if you’re experiencing frequent headaches that don’t go away or are more severe than usual.
  • Keep snacks around at all times and otherwise continue all of your healthy pregnancy habits.
  • Decide when and how you’d like to start announcing your pregnancy!

Photos in the bumpandbaby.co.nz/week-by-week/ are by Lenart Nilsson. Lenart's series was bought to fame when his photo, considered the greatest photo of the 20th century, appeared on the cover of Life magazine in 1965. “Everyone interprets images differently, depending on their social, cultural and religious background. In the digital era, I believe it is more important than ever to go back and take a look inside ourselves. What better way of doing that than with these photos?” ~ Jane Stene, art gallery director and curator of Lenart's definitive black and white series, told the The Guardian in 2019. It is Lenart Nilsson's wish that his images are never used for political debate about pro-life.
